Item Metadata only Exposing the Foundation: The Subliminal Imperialism of the Historical Critical Method(Society of Biblical Literature, 2023-11-18) Burton, Keith AugustusCritical Race Theory is an umbrella term for efforts across multiple disciplines to discern ways in which the embedded ideology of White supremacy has impacted societal norms and behaviors. It acknowledges the reality of racism and seeks to expose the foundational structures upon which it is built. These structures must be acknowledged, dismantled, and replaced if there is any hope of constructing a more equitable future for all humans. For decades, African American biblical scholars have engaged in the task of dismantling racist assumptions about the nature and content of the biblical text. Rejecting the uniform lens that is prescribed to them at seminary, they have emphasized the Afro-Asiatic cultural context of the biblical world and offered fresh translation alternatives for key passages that either directly or tangentially relate to race. For the most part, the application of Critical Race Theory to biblical studies has focused on interpretive issues. However, the impact of Eurocentric influence in the way in which we interpret scripture is most evident in the dominant influence of historical-criticism. The presuppositions behind the method are so embedded that its essential correctness is even assumed by those conducting hermeneutics through post-colonial, African-American, or other liberation approaches. While the critical study of the scriptures should be a prerequisite for responsible interpretation, a truly liberated hermeneutics should not have to meet the requirements of Eurocentric correctness in order to be taken seriously.Item Metadata only Walking the Talk: African American Hermeneutics and the De-philosophizing of Scripture(Society of Biblical Literature, 2023-11-18) Burton, Keith AugustusFor more than a millennium, biblical hermeneutics prioritized the mining of Scripture for doctrinal development. In many ways it served as the servant of a theological orthodoxy that is fixated on a political Christology which informs the propaganda of Christian cultural and religious supremacy. Having established the philosophically derived non-negotiables for authenticity, biblical interpreters in recent centuries—particularly in the west—have shifted their attention to the nature of Scripture itself. Still driven by a presumptuous quest for correctness, the investigative emphasis is on the historicity of Scripture. Since the rise of historical criticism, scholars have fixated on such issues as authentic authorship, editorial redaction, and literary analysis. These are philosophical concerns that in many ways objectify Scripture as a specimen to be cogitated, analyzed, and manipulated. The search for deeper meaning and the reconstruction of the various Sitze im Leben of the perceived communities are attempts to win intellectual debates that often distract from Scripture’s central message. Some may ask whether we can talk about a “central message" in an obviously anthological collection. However, isn’t this the very nature of an anthology? Scripture is a collection of historical narratives, poetry, letters, and sermons that echo the dual themes of liberation and justice. While reflecting historical events, it invites the reader to imagine a society that does not yet exist. It confronts the abuses of empire and condemns those who promote the imperialistic agenda. With its emphasis on liberation and justice, African American hermeneutics has sought to rescue Scripture from the philosophical academy. It acknowledges the need for responsible methods of uncovering the meaning of the individual “books,” but embraces the collection as a living document that speaks holistically to contemporary society. It recognizes the problematic in the collation and content of the collection, while highlighting the prophetic invitation to participate in the sacrificial construction of a beloved community. Ultimately, African American hermeneutics embraces scripture not merely as a philosophical document to be dissected but a practical manifesto that provides a model for the permanent transformation of humanity.Item Metadata only What Happened to the Thrones in Daniel 7:9(Adventist Society for Religious Studies, 2023-11-17) Stefanović, ZdravkoItem Metadata only Making Sense of Suffering, Kingdom, and Endurance with the Help of Revelation 1:9(Adventist Society for Religious Studies, 2023-11-17) Kostyuk, OlegItem Metadata only People of the Lie: Christian Alignment with the Antagonists in the Cosmic Conflict(Adventist Society for Religious Studies, 2023-11-17) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Black and White Biracial Marriage in the United States(2018-07) Robinson, MarlonItem Metadata only Women and Military: Military Wives, PTSD, Military Marriages: A Research Agenda(2012-09) Robinson, MarlonItem Metadata only Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nonviolent Resistance(2019) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Best Practices in Interfaith Engagement(2018-11) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Pre-Islamic Arabia and the Rise of Islam(2018) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only The Islamic Caliphates(2018) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Seven Things Your Church Should Know about Islam(2016-12) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Jesus, Ellen White and Social Justice: Towards an Understanding of the "Faith of Jesus"(2016-04) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Jesus, Ellen White and Social Justice: Towards an Understanding of the "Faith of Jesus"(2015-10) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Honesty and Healing: Democratic Delusions and Imperial Agendas(2015-10) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Why Is Obama America's First "Black" President?(2015-11) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Meaningful Ministry with Muslims(2015-11) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Building Bridges with Our Muslim Friends(2014-01) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika: The Sabbath and the Sustentation of African Religious Culture(2014) Burton, Keith AugustusItem Metadata only Get Up!
